The NUS MBA embarks on a new programme to shape future leaders

Over these three months, students from our MBA programme and 11 other schools worldwide have been participating in an inaugural online course called Future of Capitalism.

This is a brainchild of Tomo Noda, Founder and President of Shizenkan University, and it prepares students to stay ahead of the curve amid an uncertain future. Comprising 11 sessions, the students get to connect and converse with top executives, entrepreneurs, policy makers and academics. The course covers values-based management practices, social entrepreneurship, environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) investment, and emerging economies in Latin America and Asia.

“This unique programme is a collaboration amongst 12 business schools worldwide. Through this initiative, we are able to equip our MBA students as future leaders who are able to tackle economic and social issues,” said Nicole Tee, Director, MBA Programmes Office.

Twenty-nine NUS MBA students are amongst the international community of participants. They shared that the Future of Capitalism differs from the typical MBA modules. “We explored how to rethink the economic system in which we live and think about the weaknesses and limits of capitalism,” said Ignasi Rebled Lluch.

“There was a rich exchange of insights. We got to hear from world-leading expert thought leaders and had the opportunity to ask them questions whilst hearing questions and opinions from participants from all over the world,” added Tilla Martina Caveng.

The prolific speakers include Jan Peter Balkenende, Former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, and Paul Polman, ex-global CEO of Unilever turned “planet crusader”, advocator for sustainable business practices and social responsibility.

“Unlike the usual MBA class, I was able to develop a deep understanding of the most urgent world problems in this capitalistic world and learn how to mitigate and apply them in different situations. This allowed me to be more prepared as part of the next generation business leaders,” said Lim You Zhi.

Based on the positive reviews received, NUS MBA has plans to make the Future of Capitalism virtual programme a credit-bearing course next year.
