Surviving COVID-19: Jasper Chong’s story

In early 2020, then BBA first year student Jasper Chong took up a part-time job at a delivery company to earn some extra cash. The timing coincided with the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore. While demand for regular delivery jobs took a hit during circuit breaker, delivery requests for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) spiked. Despite the risks involved, Jasper recognised the urgent need and agreed to his boss’ request to take up the delivery jobs. He believed that any contribution could make a difference to the virus containment efforts.

A tough road ending in sacrifice

The workload was demanding, requiring Jasper to start early and take long drives across the island from the PPE warehouse at Ang Mo Kio (northern part of Singapore) to Tuas (far west of Singapore). The delivery cycle repeated itself every day with little time for rest and meals.

Unfortunately, the dreaded befell. When COVID-like symptoms began to manifest, Jasper took no chances. Recognising his increased exposure to the virus, he went for a swab test immediately and put himself on Stay-Home-Notice (SHN). As soon as he his results came back positive, he was rushed to an isolation facility. Battling the virus was no easy feat. Jasper experienced chest pains and remained ill for some time. But under the diligent care of the doctors and nurses, Jasper eventually made a steady and full recovery. To his relief, none of the friends and relatives he was in close contact with tested positive.

Support from NUS Business School

Jasper is grateful to NUS Business School for standing by him through the ordeal. The Business School was one of the first to call and offer support. As it was nearing the start of the new academic year when Jasper fell ill, the school ensured that Jasper could enrol in the modules he needed while recovering in hospital. The school also followed up closely with Jasper to offer pastoral care.

Resilient and resolute in the continued battle

The COVID-19 ordeal has given Jasper a newfound appreciation for the local healthcare system, and its professionals. He is grateful for their tireless care and dedication that helped see him through that health challenge.

When asked if he would take up the PPE delivery job again if given the chance, Jasper answers, “Any day. The battle with COVID-19 is far from over and  is I am willing to continue supporting as far as possible.” However, he does not discount the significance of the general civilian efforts, like donning masks and practicing good personal hygiene. He believes this collective effort and consideration for one another is what has kept Singapore relatively safe. Staying vigilant and mindful continues to be crucial in this extended battle.
