NUSBSA Youth Connexxion: Debunking career misconceptions

Held on 30 August, the NUS Business School Alumni Association (NUSBSA) Youth Connexxion aims to provide students an opportunity to connect with alumni to learn more insights about the industries and careers. The event was attended by more than 90 students, professionals and staff.

Since 2014, the format of the event involves a panel discussion segment and group networking sessions. Organised by the NUSBSA Youth Wing, this year’s edition focused on debunking misconceptions of various career and industries.

People often underestimate the amount of stress and work finance industry professionals have to endure to earn the high salaries, said Mr Benn Ng, Senior Vice President, Regional Head of FX Advisory, CIC Banque Privee Asia.

“If you are hungry and you want to be rewarded, you really have to work hard and go for it,” he said. He was from the BBA class of 1989.

Mr Ng was part of a panel discussion of alumni who shared their experience and insights of the various roles in different industries.

Students who want to become entrepreneurs should look at more than just following their passion, said Mr Lawrence Yong, CEO, Founder, MoolahSense, who was also in the same panel.

“It is probably more important to think about the purpose and come to a realisation of what you are really striving for in your personal life before you take the plunge into entrepreneurship,” he said. Mr Yong graduated from NUS Business School in 2002.

The other speakers at the panel include Ms Lim Puay-Sze, Director, Human Capital, Public Service Divison, PMO (Prime Minister’s Office); Ms Lim Yi Ning, Head of Marketing, Amazon Prime Now Singapore; Mr Lee Keng Leong, Deputy Director, NTUC Fairprice Online; and Mr Alex Lee, Auditor, KPMG.

The event also has group networking sessions where students get to talk to alumni working in companies such as Deutsche Bank, Facebook and MSIG Asia.
