MSBA team wins international AI case competition

Congratulations to MSBA students Gino Martelli Tiu, Widya Salim, Rachel Sng and Xhoni Shollaj for their win at analytics firm QuantumBlack’s inaugural AI student case competition.

The competition had some 40 teams around the globe participating in categories of finance, health and e-commerce. The MSBA team won in the finance category with their machine learning-based financial product recommendation system.

The team had no experience with recommendation systems but spent time researching on building such platforms. The students added that the competition was an experiential opportunity for them.

“It was a great learning experience where we got the chance to learn a new domain and framework. We were happy to have identified an area which we could tackle and apply our skillset towards,” said Widya.

The team were also grateful to Assoc Prof James Pang (Co-Director, NUS BAC) who advised them on the privacy and security aspects of the system.

The four are set to build on their analytics knowledge further. As the winning team, the students are offered a three-month mentorship programme with QuantumBlack.
