Inaugural MSBA Alumni Reunion

The Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) programme aims to enable participants to understand and solve complex business analytics problems using various analytics techniques and tools. Established under the NUS Business Analytics Centre (BAC) to support the development of Business Analytics (BA) professionals and experts, BAC is jointly hosted by a unique partnership between NUS Business School and the NUS School of Computing – and global IT giant IBM.

The first MSBA Alumni Reunion Dinner was held at the NUSS Suntec City Guild House in December 2017. The celebrations saw many alums catching up with each other, while different cohorts took the opportunity to forge new acquaintances.

To get the crowd warmed up to each other, students and staff were split into three teams to create a cheer using the letters “MSBA”. Thereafter, attendees were challenged to a game of Human Bingo.

The reunion also saw the minting of this year’s MSBA Ambassadors where they represent their classmates, and participate in programme outreach, networking activities with alumni, current and prospective students. Through an online voting by their fellow classmates, the final representatives were Abhishek Roy (Class of 2017) and Edward Teo (Class of 2016).

During the event, five students – Abhishek Roy, Harshmeet Singh Bedi, Cheng Chang Hua, Li Zhijun and Zhou Yu Min were presented with awards for their brilliant analytic solutions as part of their capstone projects. Abhishek’s in inventory levels and manufacturing delays, Harshmeet’s in social media listening and consumer trends, Chang Hua’s in machine learning and drainage systems, Zhijun’s application in graph analytics and money laundering detection, and Yumin’s utilisation of natural language processing and text mining techniques in an investment article recommendation tool.

“Not only did the alumni meeting provided an opportunity to meet my classmates and seniors, it also allowed us to discuss the dynamics of the analytics market. I would love to see more gatherings like this, and I look forward to the next one,” said Harshmeet.
