Congratulations to our Team Singapore SEA Games athletes

Team Singapore athletes brought home a remarkable 188 medals at the 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After two weeks of intense competition, the Games came to a close on 30 August. Contributing to this impressive feat were NUS students and alumni who did the nation and University proud with their fighting spirit and sportsmanship. A special shout out to our NUS Business School students who were part of this contingent.

Men’s Water Polo Team

BBA Yr 3 Ang An Jun said, “It’s been an incredible journey representing Singapore and winning the gold medal. Juggling school work and the training sessions was tough, but all the sacrifices have paid off and we just wanted to give our best performances at the SEA Games.” The team upheld traditions by clinching the gold award for the 27th consecutive SEA Games.

For BBA Yr 2 Ooi Yee Jia said he’s grateful for all the support shown by NUS. Sharing a quote he took to heart from his coach – you will always miss all the shots you don’t take. He said, “This is not just for sports, but as a Business student, every opportunity not taken, is a lost one. I hope by sharing this, others will be inspired to have the courage and initiative to do things they’ve always wanted to, and dreamed of.”

Women’s Water Polo Team

For BBA Yr 2 Cleona Zhu’s debut SEA Games, she said, “I went in with the simple aim of translating whatever hard work and sacrifices I’ve made thus far into my performance during the games. It’s been an eye-opening experience competing with top teams around SEA.” Clinching the silver medal as a team, she added, ” Most importantly, I am incredibly proud of my team’s progress and fighting spirit during the entire journey. I’ll really cherish the fond memories we’ve forged together. It’s truly been an honour being able to represent the country.”

Women’s National Sailing Team

BBA Yr 3 Jillian Lee took home the gold award for the Women’s Individual Dinghy Laser Radial event. She said, “It was a really memorable experience with a fair share of ups and downs but I am happy to have done my country proud. Moments like these are definitely ones that I’ll treasure for the rest of my life.”

Of her experience, BBA Yr 2 Jessica Goh said, “Representing the country at any competition is always an honour. This SEA Games, we witnessed and experienced many joyous moments of victory, and happiness just being around our teammates; but also moments of tears and frustration from circumstances that were not in our favour. However, we sailed our hearts out to the best of our ability, and I think that’s what truly matters.” Her team nabbed the silver medal in the Women’s Team Racing Dinghy Laser Radial event.

Women’s Wushu

BBA Yr 1 Fung Hui Xin snagged a bronze in the Wushu Women’s Optional Jianshu (Sword) event. She also made news competing with her brother Fung Jin Jie, for the first time in the same Games. In the sport for 13 years, she told Today Online, she didn’t have any goals in mind, but simply did her best, and got a good result.

Rugby Team

The Singapore Rugby team, which includes BAC Yr 4 Nicholas Yau and BBA Yr 2 Samuel Teo, took home a silver after putting up a fierce fight in the finals against the Malaysian team.

Men’s Basketball Team

The team placed 4th after a close fight with Thailand for 3rd place.
