BBA students clinch third at Sauder Summit Global Case Competition in Vancouver
The case competition was organised by Sauder School of Business and had participating teams from 12 business schools from across the world including Australia, China, Denmark, and the US. The competition comprised two 5-hour cases and one 24-hour case.
With Deputy Dean Professor Hum Sin Hoon as a faculty advisor, the team (Benjamin Aw, Sharyn Poerwanto, Yap Li Yin and Chng Guo Wei) had the opportunity to work on a diverse set of cases – optimising land assets for an aboriginal community, identifying business opportunity for a software firm, and rejuvenating the fan base of an ice hockey team.
“It was a great experience to see how we can put our business minds together to building something good for the aboriginal community,” said Sharyn.
“Though it is a for-profit organisation, cracking a case on a first nation community is different from a business case, because you have to think of critical societal implications business decisions have on the community and the societal needs the community faces,” she said.
The team had impressed the judges with their sound analysis and practical recommendations. Sharyn added that the team also scored points with an eloquent presentation style that was engaging to the judging panel.
