A Shared Network: One Year On

A year ago, BIZBeat ran a feature on Lam Jing Jie BBA student and co-founder of the NUS Business School Asset and Wealth Management Club (AWMC) on his novel endeavor to create a network of like-minded finance students. Since then, the club has progressed remarkably – championing exciting initiatives and forging strategic partners. In this story feature, BIZBeat expounds on the club’s initiatives and milestones.

A change of name

The club started out as the “Wealth Management Group”, but subsequently changed it to “NUS Business School Asset and Wealth Management Club”. The first reason for the change was to reflect the club’s close affiliation with the business faculty, and the second was to better reflect its breadth of coverage – ranging from wealth management to asset management.

Partnering with Raffles Family Office

One of the club’s key milestones in the past year was striking a strategic partnership with Raffles Family Office (RFO), a multi-family office with operations in Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Taiwan. The club took the initiative to reach out via LinkedIn, with the intention to tap on the office’s resources and wisdom, to learn more about the field.

The partnership has gotten off to a roaring success, allowing students to go beyond classroom learning to gain first-hand experience from seasoned industry veterans. With the help of RFO, the club was able to organize 12 webinar sessions featuring guest speakers from the office. These managers took time out from their busy schedules to share their knowledge and experiences with the inquisitive student analysts. Through the RFO network, the club was also able to bring in 17 industry mentors from prestigious banks to provide career guidance. This enabled the AWMC to achieve a 2:1 analyst to mentor ratio – a commendable feat!

The partnership experience has also been a positive one for RFO, who sang praises of the NUS Business School students:

“We have nothing but good things to say about the AWMC members and the NUS Business School students in general. Since we have held multiple dialogues and presentations with them, we must say that many of them have demonstrated knowledge and maturity way beyond their years. The speakers have also been very impressed by the quality of the students. Great job so far, keep up the good work!” – Jaydee Lin, Managing Partner and Co-founder of Raffles Family Office

Staying true to the club’s ethos

From the outset, the NUS Business School AWMC sought to prize quality over quantity in its member community. Despite strong interest from the student community, the club has remained careful to only recruit members who demonstrate genuine passion and commitment towards asset and wealth management. Starting with a pioneer group of 20 to 30 members, the club has since grown to its present strength of 46.

The Road Ahead

The club has been gaining good traction, having organised some 25 weekly webinars and rapidly expanding its mentorship programme. The leadership hopes to keep the momentum going, and hopes for the AWMC to become a globally-recognised student-led asset and wealth management club, through proactively seeking partnership opportunities with the industry.
