Star Jingkaojai
Senator Expert (Energy and Environment Law), National Assembly of Thailand
EMBA, Class of 2010
Star Jingkaojai, known as Star, is a Thai-born executive who has made significant strides in the cement industry, and whose career began at the chemical giant DuPont. A pivotal moment in his life came during the 1997 Asian financial crisis, known in Thailand as the Tom Yum Kung crisis, when Star joined Siam City Cement.
During his tenure at Siam City Cement, the company was acquired by Holcim, the world’s largest cement producer. This acquisition marked the start of Star’s international ventures and presented significant challenges. Leading the company through the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis and navigating the complexities of a major international merger tested his leadership and resilience. Star had to find ways to align the corporate culture while maintaining profitability in a shifting business environment.
A critical turning point was Star’s decision to return to academia and pursue an Executive Master in Business Administration degree at NUS Business School. This move equipped him with enhanced marketing and decision-making skills, which became vital as he faced mounting industry pressures. The global connections he built with C-level executives during his studies provided him with invaluable insights and strategies to navigate leadership roles on an international scale.
As the cement industry entered the digital age, Star faced another challenge—introducing innovation in a traditional industry. His forward-thinking initiatives, such as the introduction of e-commerce in the cement sector and the pioneering use of alternative fuels, met strong resistance within the company. Star had to overcome internal pushback and manage communication barriers during the change management process. By persistently advocating for innovation and leveraging the knowledge gained from NUS Business School, Star successfully transformed operational efficiency and sustainability practices within the cement industry throughout his career.
A key source of strength for Star during these challenges has been his deep connection with nature and his unique approach to leadership. Rooted in the principles of embracing nature and achieving harmony, Star’s leadership philosophy emphasises work-life harmony over balance. He believes that maintaining a harmonious relationship between work and personal life is essential for sustained success. Drawing energy and clarity from nature, Star finds solace and inspiration in them to manage stress and remain focused on his vision.
Beyond his professional achievements, Star is deeply committed to giving back to society. He has sponsored the education of numerous students, believing in the importance of helping others succeed without seeking recognition.
Looking ahead, Star aims to influence policymaking in Thailand, leveraging his connections with government officials to promote sustainable practices. While he does not seek a formal political role, he remains committed to driving positive change at a national level.
