Sunakshi Agarwal

Founder, Ardpure

MSc in Management + CEMS MIM, Class of 2017

Sunakshi Agarwal’s early life in Assam was shaped by her family’s deep respect for nature and sustainability, as well as the motivation to help people and give back to society. But more than that, she came from a business family, and she knew from a young age that she wanted to help others while making a name for herself. A chance encounter with some weavers in Assam showed her the path ahead—that she could produce beautiful, sustainable products while providing a livelihood for the artisans she engaged for her business.

These philosophies soon became the cornerstone of her company, Ardpure, known for its eco-friendly everyday household products (such as bags, coasters and organisers) made from reeds found in Northeast India, like water hyacinth and kauna grass.

Sunakshi’s entrepreneurial journey was not without challenges. Gaining visibility for Ardpure’s unique, eco-friendly products was an uphill battle. Initially, few people were aware of her offerings, and building a customer base proved difficult. To overcome this, she turned to various business strategies like social media and pop-up stores to showcase her products. Eventually, an email marketing campaign resulted in her first major order—1,400 bags for corporate gifts during Diwali—a breakthrough that reaffirmed her belief in the potential of her brand.

Reflecting on her journey, Sunakshi notes, “Even if I can recycle a few kilograms of plastic waste, I am happy to have done it.” Her passion for sustainability and determination to make a positive impact on the environment kept her moving forward despite the obstacles.

Sunakshi credits the NUS Business School for sharpening her business acumen and boosting her confidence. The school’s rigorous curriculum helped her develop problem-solving skills, while its supportive community nurtured her growth. “The NUS experience taught me that there are a hundred ways to think of a solution. You are not always right, but you must be open to understanding others’ perspectives,” she shares. The confidence she gained during her time at NUS enabled her to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship with greater clarity and resolve.

Today, Sunakshi has created a sustainable business model that supports local artisans and reduces plastic waste. With plans to expand into upcycling and minimise waste further, Sunakshi remains committed to creating products that reflect her eco-conscious values.
